Workplace Server 8.1 and Workplace Desktop for Windows and Mac 8.1
September 19, 2019
Release Notes
We're pleased to announce the release of Workplace Server 8.1.0.56, Workplace Desktop for Windows 8.1.0.56, and Workplace Desktop for Mac 8.1.0.103, which include the following changes and issue resolutions:
Changes
A new security feature called Full Disk Access was introduced with macOS Mojave. In order for Workplace Desktop for Mac backups to work properly in macOS Mojave or later, you must enable Full Disk Access. To learn how, please refer to Do I have to do anything to my macOS settings to allow Workplace to function properly?
You may no longer install Workplace Desktop for Windows on a server operating system. Upgrades of existing installations are permitted. Workplace Server must be used on server operating systems.
In order to make our newest functionality available to you no matter how you work with Workplace, we've made a change to the process for creating public shares from Workplace Desktop. Now, when you right-click on an item in your Workplace Folder and choose the Create Public Share... option, Workplace Online will automatically launch and display the public share interface. For information on using that interface, please refer to Create a public share in the Managing project, folder, and file public shares topic.
Workplace Desktop for Windows will now automatically confirm that you have the correct permissions before you delete a file or folder synced via Workplace. Previously, Workplace would prompt to correct the issue after deleting the items locally. Now, Workplace will prompt that the operation can't complete prior to attempting to delete the local version.
The onscreen SmartBadge notification popup that displayed in Workplace Desktop for Windows and Mac when a file was locked was too obtrusive and required two clicks to hide. In order to improve user experience, we've removed the onscreen popup. Now, regardless of how the locked event occurred (manual lock in SmartBadge, auto-lock on document edit, etc.), the notification will not display.
All other SmartBadge notifications remain unchanged.
When the Prevent Project Creation policy is applied, the Create Project from Local Folder Option is now hidden in Workplace Desktop for Windows and Mac.
Issue Resolutions
When a network volume disconnected and then reconnected, the Workplace Server "watcher," which alerts the Workplace service of changes and initiates syncs, stopped functioning. Projects synced to that volume would only sync after the daily scan. The issue has been resolved; the "watcher" will automatically detect these scenarios and function correctly.
In Workplace Desktop for Mac, a dialog box resulting from changes to hardware did not function properly. The issue has been resolved.
Upgrade of Workplace Desktop for Windows or Workplace Server result in a reset of the "run as" selection to LocalSystem instead of the previously selected user. The issue has been resolved.
Please note that upgrading from a previous version to version 8.1 will cause the account running the service to revert to LocalSystem. This will not, however, occur again upon subsequent upgrades.
When the Lock Workplace Desktop Preferences policy was applied, existing synced projects were unsynced. Since the only effect of the policy should be to prevent the user from syncing new projects or unsyncing projects, the existing projects must remain synced. The issue has been resolved.
On extremely busy servers, Workplace Desktop for Windows was not releasing locks files when appropriate. The issue has been resolved.
When a sync error occurs in Workplace Desktop for Windows, a error dialog box displays. The full path for the file(s) that failed to sync was truncated on the right side. The path now wraps in the display area, making the entire path visible.
As always, we've included in this release a number of interface improvements and corrections.
